Wakefield Libraries commissioned Edgelands Arts to work with librarians and library visitors, particularly those living with and caring for people living with dementia, to create unique and personal art works to complement newly refurbished Dementia Friendly spaces in Wakefield libraries .

The artworks mapped and creatively interpreted landscapes and memories of people from three areas in the Wakefield District – Normanton, Featherstoneand Sandal.

The By You Tapestry in Featherstone Library contains silk paintings of local scenes which were created by the participants. The silk paintings are displayed over maps of the town containing participants' memories, thoughts and impressions of Featherstone.

Building Normanton is a silk painting of local buildings compiled into a story landscape evoking the area mounted in the library's social space.

Down Memory Lane is created out of tiles painted by the participants depicting plants from the dementia garden (Memory Lane) framing a view of landscape across to nearby Sandal Castle.

The project, funded by Arts Council through Grants for the Arts, provided creative, inspirational spaces in libraries and high quality arts experiences for older people with dementia.  It supported librarians to learn new dementia friendly arts skills and helped develop new Active Minds groups in Normanton and Featherstone.
